In response to an inquiry on an NPC deputy's advice that measures to punish die-hard "Taiwan independence" separatists could be further detailed and implemented through legislative work at the NPC Standing Committee level or through regulatory rules at the State Council level,Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for China's State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said on Wednesday that the lawful punishment of die-hard "Taiwan independence" separatists for splitting the country and inciting division is a rightful act meant to defend national sovereignty, reunification of the motherland and territorial integrity. 

It is a just move to safeguard the common interests of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Straits and the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation, Chen said.

The suggestions made by the NPC deputy reflect the voices and wishes of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Straits, who hope to legally punish those that undermine cross-Straits relations, maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits, and live peaceful and prosperous lives, said Chen.
