The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy’s J-15D carrier-borne electronic warfare aircraft will make debut at Airshow China 2024.
The J-15D is capable of electronic disruption and suppression, Zhang Junshe, a Chinese military expert, told the Global Times on Saturday.
The PLA Navy will participate for the first time in the Airshow China 2024, scheduled to kick off on Tuesday in Zhuhai, South China’s Guangdong Province, featuring various types of active-service equipment debuting for the first time, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Saturday.
For flight performances, the PLA Navy will send the J-15D carrier-borne electronic warfare aircraft, the J-15T carrier-borne fighter jet, the Z-20J shipborne helicopter and Z-8C transport helicopter to perform maneuvers including reverse area landing and buddy refueling, Xinhua reported. The PLA Marine Corps members and representatives of first batch of female carrier-borne pilots will also make public appearance at the air show.
In static displays, the J-15T carrier-borne fighter jet, the Z-9F shipborne anti-submarine helicopter and Y-8 anti-submarine patrol aircraft will be showcased alongside various shipborne weapon systems and maritime rescue equipment, the report said.
The J-15D carrier-borne electronic warfare aircraft and the J-15T carrier-borne fighter conducted formation training in a formation on Saturday, marking the first public appearance of the J-15D, China Central Television (CCTV) reported.
The J-15D is a twin-seat carrier-borne electronic warfare aircraft, CCTV said.
Zhang said the J-15D is a specialized electronic warfare aircraft and an essential part of an aircraft carrier air wing.
It is equipped with advanced electronic warfare systems with robust electronic disruption and suppression capabilities. Electronic war capabilities are particularly important in modern naval warfare in information-driven warfare, so the electronic warfare aircraft is a power amplifier to an aircraft carrier air wing, Zhang said.
The J-15D is a significant addition to an aircraft carrier group’s far seas combat capabilities, Zhang said.
The shipborne version of the Z-20 also made its debut when it arrived in Zhuhai on Friday.
Zhang said that the Z-20J is a primary aviation asset for amphibious marine operations, as it can be equipped with air-to-ground missiles, rockets and guns to deliver effective fire support against land targets.
As a multipurpose aircraft, the Z-20J can also perform aerial transport and search and rescue missions, he said.
