The essence of China-US economic and trade relations is mutual benefit and win-win cooperation. China is willing to address mutual concerns through dialogue and consultation based on mutual respect, equality and reciprocity, but rejects pressure or threats, Lou Qinjian, spokesperson for the third session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC), said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Trade between countries should adhere to World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, and trade disputes should be resolved within the WTO framework. The US' unilateral tariff increases violate WTO rules and disrupt the security and stability of global industrial and supply chains, Lou said in response to questions regarding the US imposing an additional 10-percent tariff on Chinese exports.

China hopes the US will meet it halfway and seek solutions through equal-footed consultations. China is also willing to strengthen cooperation with other countries to safeguard the hard-won multilateral trading system, oppose unilateralism and protectionism and promote an inclusive and mutually beneficial global economy, Lou said.

Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 46 years ago, the China-US trade has grown more than 200 folds, with two-way investment stock reaching around $250 billion. This has not only benefited their peoples, but also bolstered global economic growth, Lou said.

History proves that China and the US benefit from cooperation and lose from confrontation. A stable, healthy and sustainable China-US relationship serves the interests of both countries and meets the expectations of the international community. As two major nations with distinct national contexts, some differences are inevitable. The key is to respect each other's core interests and resolve issues constructively, Lou noted.

"China remains open to addressing mutual concerns through dialogue and consultation on the basis of mutual respect, equality and reciprocity. However, we will not accept pressure or threats and will firmly safeguard our national sovereignty, security and development interests. We hope the US will work with China to implement the important consensus reached by the two leaders and return to the path of resolving issues through dialogue and consultation," Lou stressed.
