Customs officers in Nanjing, East China's Jiangsu Province, recently intercepted 1.2 kilograms of salted raw rattlesnake in an incoming mail package, according to China's General Administration of Customs on February 15.
During the inspection of a package declared as "snacks," customs officers detected irregularities in the X-ray scan and a pungent odor. Upon further inspection, they found a plastic jar with signs of repackaging, according to the customs.
Inside the jar were salted raw rattlesnake tails, weighing 1.2 kilograms. Currently, the package has been temporarily withheld in accordance with regulations.
Customs authorities issued a reminder that the import of meat products, including organs, whether raw or processed, is strictly prohibited.
After the incident spread online, many Chinese netizens expressed shock, finding the idea of consuming raw salted rattlesnake astonishing.
