During a Sunday meeting with visiting UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves, who attended the 11th China-UK Economic and Financial Dialogue in Beijing on Saturday, Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng said that he hopes to strengthen exchanges between the city of Shanghai and the UK so as to achieve higher-level win-win cooperation, according to a report on the official WeChat account of the Information Office of Shanghai Municipality.

Gong noted that Shanghai plays a pivotal role as a bridge for China-UK cooperation, with ties dating back to 1996 when Shanghai established a friendly relationship with the City of London. Since then, Shanghai has also partnered with Liverpool and Greater London, achieving positive outcomes.

The mayor said that he looks forward to strengthening economic and trade exchanges, industrial investment, financial openness and cooperation in technological innovation between the two sides. Gong also extended an invitation for British companies to participate in this year's China International Import Expo and explore investments in areas such as clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and healthcare.

Gong called for deeper connections between financial markets, enhanced research exchanges between universities and institutions, and joint innovation in digital economy and AI sectors to achieve high-quality development and benefit both regions' citizens.

Reeves emphasized the key outcomes of the recent economic dialogue, including agreements on capital market connectivity and the expansion of British financial institutions in China. She underscored Shanghai's pivotal role, noting that two-thirds of UK companies in China have chosen the city as their headquarters.

Looking ahead, Reeves expressed hopes for further cooperation to promote economic growth and strengthen UK-China relations.

The UK Chancellor was on a two-day visit to China over the weekend, during which both sides have agreed to further expand economic and financial cooperation, the Xinhua News Agency reported.
