One million electric propulsion units for vehicles of Chinese brands NIO and ALPS, produced annually with robots guided by 3D vision; 150,000 hybrid transmission systems each year for every assembly line operating at Hycet, a subsidiary of Great Wall Motors; 400,000 variable compression ratio engines for Dongfeng Nissan, with cylinder heads assembled by robots; 125,000 pick-ups for JMC Ford in Xiaolan, 200,000 electric vehicles for Hycan, and 60,000 heavy-duty Actros trucks for Foton Daimler...
These numbers give an idea of the volume of the new Chinese mobility industry, which often operates in symbiosis with automotive manufacturers and other foreign companies.
For example, Comau, a company specialized in sustainable automation and robotics, has contributed to the aforementioned successes with its technologies. Founded in Turin in 1973, equipped with an international network with seven innovation centers and 12 production plants in as many countries and employing a total of 3,700 people, the company has been present in China since 1997 with a wholly-owned subsidiary, Comau China, which has 750 employees - all Chinese - across its headquarters in Shanghai and separate locations in Kunshan in East China's Jiangsu Province and Dalian in Northeast China's Liaoning Province. The crown jewel of the Shanghai plant is its innovation center, which has been focused for several years on developing advanced technology systems for e-mobility (particularly electric motors), digital solutions for increasingly intelligent automation and robotics in their industrial applications, as well as assembly and processing systems for internal combustion engines.
Scalability, flexibility, speed, process and cost efficiency, along with a strong familiarity with electric motors and their components, from stators to batteries, this is the mix of skills that Comau leverages to impress its Chinese clients and partners, whom it meets at conferences, trade fairs, and award ceremonies, or invites to its headquarters in Grugliasco, as happened in October with a delegation led by Zhu Jiangming, founder, president, and CEO of the electric vehicle manufacturer Leapmotor.
"Thanks to a well-established presence in China over the years, Comau has been able to respond to the production needs of Chinese companies and those international firms operating in the local market," summarized Pietro Gorlier, CEO of Comau.
"Starting from our expertise in the automotive sector, both traditional and electric, we are acquiring new clients in increasingly diverse markets, from energy to logistics and food."
Without ever stopping to broaden its horizons, including geographical ones, the company has been "leveraging the Italy-China collaboration, which represents a strength for us," Gorlier emphasized.
"We aim to extend our business in the Pacific area - where we are already developing significant projects for our clients in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia."
