The Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) expressed regret on Monday over the European Union's decision to bring China's judicial handling of standard essential patent (SEP) licensing disputes before the World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute resolution mechanism and reaffirmed its commitment to firmly safeguarding its legitimate rights and interests in this matter.
The comments were made by an official of MOFCOM's treaty and law department in response to media inquiries regarding the EU's reportedly latest move.
MOFCOM confirmed that it had received the EU's request for consultations on the issue earlier on Monday, in a statement released on the ministry's official website.
The official emphasize that China has consistently complied with WTO rules and its accession commitments, and has continuously strengthened the legal framework and enforcement of intellectual property rights protection, with its progress widely acknowledged.
"Channels for dialogue between China and the EU on intellectual property issues have remained open," per the ministry official.
"China regrets the EU's decision to initiate a lawsuit," the official added, affirming that China would handle the follow-up matters in strict accordance with WTO regulations and resolutely protect its legal rights and interests.
