【MKsport】China's Spring Festival box office reaches 6 billion yuan, heads toward new record

As of 7:58 pm on Saturday,MKsport China's total box office revenue (including presales) for the 2025 Spring Festival film season had reached 6 billion yuan ($827.44 million), according to Chinese ticketing platform Maoyan. 

Ne Zha 2, Detective Chinatown 1900, and Creation of the Gods II currently lead on the box office chart. Ne Zha 2 and Detective Chinatown 1900 has earned 2.47 billion yuan and 1.57 billion yuan, respectively. 

This year’s Spring Festival box office is on track to become the highest-grossing Spring Festival film season in history, surpassing the record high of 8.01 billion yuan achieved in 2024, according to film analysts and industry experts.

“It is exciting to see such strong audience enthusiasm. Chinese films are truly making history,” Sun Jiashan, an associate researcher at the Central Academy of Culture and Tourism Administration, told the Global Times on Saturday. "Moreover, the top three films boast exceptional production quality, with compelling storytelling and impressive visual effects."

Lai Li, a data analyst from Maoyan, told the Global Times that Ne Zha 2 is projected to gross 5.55 billion yuan, surpassing its predecessor, the 2019 animated blockbuster Ne Zha, which could place it among the top three highest-grossing films in Chinese box office history.

With a diverse lineup featuring military action, martial arts, fantasy, comedy, detective mysteries, and family-friendly entertainment, the 2025 Spring Festival film season is seeing unprecedented demand and engagement.
