【MKsport】China sets new box office, audience records during 2025 Spring Festival season

China's box office revenue during the 8-day-long Spring Festival holiday reached a record 9.51 billion yuan,MKsport with nationwide movie attendance hitting an all-time high of 187 million people, setting new records for the Spring Festival season, data from China Film Administration showed on Wednesday.

Among the six domestically produced films, Ne Zha2 took the lead with 4.839 billion yuan of box office revenue. Detective Chinatown 1900, Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force, and The Legend of the Condor Heroes: The Great Heroranked second to fourth. Animate film Boonie Bears: Future Rebornand military-themed film Operation Leviathanare the follow-ups.

As of 13:29 on Wednesday, the total box office revenue of the six films mentioned above has exceeded 10 billion yuan (including presales), according to data from the Chinese online ticketing platform Maoyan.

A report analyzing the 2025 Spring Festival film market by Maoyan stated that all films aired during the festival are linked to well-known intellectual properties (IPs), which fueled both box office growth and social media engagement. 

Notably, Ne Zha2, the sequel of the blockbuster Ne Zhain 2019, featured significant production upgrades, especially in special effects and visual storytelling, earning unexpectedly strong views, the report noted, highlighting its role in sustaining robust box office earnings during the holiday.

The simultaneously release of multiple high-quality homegrown films significantly boosted the film market, with January 30, 2025, the first day of 2025 Spring Festival, setting single-day national records of 1.805 billion yuan in box office revenue and 35.151 million moviegoers.

Zhang Yi, CEO of the iiMedia Research Institute, told the Global Times on Wednesday that the top three films during the holiday attracted audiences from various age groups, amplifying their contribution to overall box office earnings. 

China's National Bureau of Statistics is scheduled to release its monthly Consumer Price Index for January 2025 on Sunday. Zhang projected that the robust consumption surrounding the 2025 Spring Festival holiday will likely be reflected in the key index.
