The third session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) is set to open in Beijing on Wednesday. Several deputies from Hong Kong to the NPC told the Global Times they would make proposals to enhance the patriotic education in Hong Kong, particularly on the occasion marking 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War this year.

Wong Kam-leung, a deputy from Hong Kong to the NPC and the chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers, told the Global Times on Tuesday that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. The history of the War of Resistance is a glorious chapter of the Chinese nation's indomitable and heroic struggle, and it is also an important part of patriotic education.

"We hope to strengthen cooperation with education departments on the Chinese mainland to help Hong Kong organize more related educational activities and large-scale exhibitions," Wong said.

Also, we wish to enhance professional support for teachers in the education of the history of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, so that young people can have a deeper understanding of this historical period and cultivate their national identity and patriotic spirit, Wong noted.

In promoting patriotic education, Starry Lee Wai-king, Hong Kong's member of the NPC Standing Committee, proposed on implementing the Patriotic Education Law and the National Defense Education Law in Hong Kong, suggesting that provinces across the mainland can integrate their distinctive red tourism resources, including exhibitions and museums, to establish more patriotic tourism bases and routes for Hong Kong students, according to a statement the Hong Kong delegation shared with the Global Times on Tuesday.

"This would provide Hong Kong students with more meaningful destinations for exchange programs on the mainland, supporting the implementation of patriotic education in Hong Kong," Lee said in the statement.

"As this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, I also recommended that relevant departments expand the reach of their commemorative activities to include Hong Kong. For example, by organizing a series of themed exhibitions at the Hong Kong Museum of the War of Resistance and Coastal Defence, so that local residents—especially students—could participate in related events held on the mainland, fostering patriotic spirit," Lee said.

When explaining the special significance of Hong Kong's history in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, Chan Yung, a deputy to the NPC, told the Global Times that the Dongjiang Column, particularly the Hong Kong and Kowloon brigade, which operated under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), made major contribution in the resistance of Japanese aggression during Hong Kong's occupation by the Japanese troops.

"As an armed force led by the CPC, the Dongjiang Column firmly held its ground in Hong Kong after the British army's surrender, revealing historical details of how the CPC helped maintain order in the city - providing a historical footnote for the principle of 'patriots administering Hong Kong'," Chan said, adding that it's important for the Hong Kong people to enhance their understanding and knowledge on this history.

Stanley Ng Chau-pei, a deputy to the NPC, was quoted as saying in a report by Hong Kong media outlet Wei Wen Po on Tuesday that he plans to propose strengthening the integration of Hong Kong's historical and cultural resources to enrich the content of 'one country, two systems' historical and cultural education.

As part of China, Hong Kong possesses rich historical and cultural resources, serving both as an integral component of Chinese culture and a unique bridge for East-West cultural exchange, Ng said, according to the media report.

Ng emphasized that enhancing the integration of Hong Kong's historical and cultural resources would not only enrich national history and cultural education but also help Hong Kong's youth gain a deeper understanding of the country's history and culture. This, in turn, would support historical education aligned with "one country, two systems" and strengthen national identity and a sense of national belonging, he said.

Ng also suggested incorporating Hong Kong's historical and cultural resources into the national history and cultural education system, enhancing the practicality and interactivity of historical education, promoting exchanges and cooperation between the mainland and Hong Kong in history and cultural education, strengthening research and promotion of Hong Kong's historical and cultural heritage, and establishing an evaluation mechanism for historical and cultural education.
