A team from Southwest China's Sichuan Province, which boasts nine graduates from Peking University and two from Tsinghua University, won the Global Mahjong Champions League 2024 China Finals with prize money of 200,000 yuan ($27,580) on Tuesday.
The Global Mahjong Champions League 2024 China Finals concluded on Tuesday in Hangzhou, East China's Zhejiang Province. A total of 16 top-caliber teams from across China participated in this tournament, with a total of nearly 200 players, all of whom are professionalplayers, according to a Hangzhou-based media outlet.
After several rounds of competition, the teams from Sichuan and Shandong sailed to the finals. The Sichuan team fielded two graduates from Peking University, battling with the Shandong team for 10 hours with 64 rounds of Mahjong, said the media report. In the end, the Sichuan team narrowly defeated the Shandong teamby one point to catch the trophy, winning 200,000 yuan ($27,580) in prize money, according to the report.
During the game, the Sichuan team was once in a desperate situation, but it overcame it through meticulous calculation backed up with strong determination. Beyond their mental resilience, the Peking University pair competing in the finals had known each other early on, and their strong bond laid a solid foundation for their championship victory.
In an interview, Wu Taikang, the team captain, said, "The team includes nine graduates from Peking University and two from Tsinghua University."
The top players engage in rapid mental processing throughout the game. Sometimes they can deduce their own cards from those already played and even analyze what their teammates might need, according to themedia report. It's essential to understand opponents deeply, make sharp judgments, and employ tactical guesses, the winners said.
