A total of 20 people were killed during a fire that broke out at an apartment for the elderly in Longhua county,MK sport North China's Hebei Province on Tuesday night, the Xinhua News Agency reported. Head of the apartment have been arrested by local police.

The remaining elderly residents at the house have been transferred to nearby hospitals for further observation and treatment. Expert teams from both the Hebei provincial government and the Chengde municipal government have arrived at the scene to oversee rescue efforts and follow-up work. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

At present, the relevant person in charge of the apartment has been taken into custody by local police. The investigation into the cause of the accident, the consolation of the families of the victims and other work are being carried out in an orderly manner, according to China Central Television. 

The Work Safety Committee of China's State Council announced on Wednesday to oversee the investigations into the fire incident. The committee required Hebei to promptly organize an investigation into the accident, determine the causes and responsibilities from all aspects of the tragedy as soon as possible, and seriously propose handling opinions and rectification measures, according to the Ministry of Emergency Management.
